Actually this is now produced by young actors, at various hotels around
the city. We had balcony seats, the orchestra being a dinner theatre format.
Good performance, if a bit hokey and clumsy at times, especially the supertitles
“I wish I could get there successfully earlier to Lin An prefecture” – have to
wonder if even Puccini could do anything with that libretto. Then, a bit later,
a new call sign, “Hey, scholar!” The 2 performances seem to have been stripped
from larger works – first was a 2 character interaction; second was “Monkey king
attacked by 14 ghosts”. Not a lot of music per se. A solo for orchestra at the
start, then mostly accompaniment or sound effects for the actors. First piece
was more a comic diversion, with mime. Second was acrobatics and choreographed
fighting with stock comic diversions. Overall worthwhile, once.
